Why an Instagram Reel Downloads Without Sound (and How to Fix It)

You save a Reel, open it in the gallery, and the picture plays fine but there is no sound. This happens with a lot of Reel downloaders, and the cause is nearly always the same: Instagram does not store a Reel as one file.

Picture and sound are stored separately

The Instagram app plays Reels with a technique called DASH. Instead of one MP4, the server keeps a list of video-only streams (360p, 480p, 720p, 1080p…) and a separate audio-only stream. The app downloads the size that suits your connection and plays it together with the audio.

A simple downloader grabs the first video link it finds and stops there. The result is a perfectly sharp MP4 with no audio track inside. You can check this yourself: on Android open the file with VLC, tap the Audio icon, and you will see Disable as the only track.

How we avoid it

Our server reads the whole list, picks the best video stream and the audio stream, and copies both into a single MP4 as it sends the file to you. Nothing is re-encoded, so it is quick and the quality is untouched. If you downloaded a Reel from this site and it has no sound, it is one of the two cases below.

Case 1: the Reel really has no audio

Some Reels are uploaded without a soundtrack, and Instagram sometimes removes music after a copyright claim. In both cases there is no audio stream at all. You can confirm it in the app: if the speaker icon is crossed out or the sound label says Audio unavailable, the Reel is silent for everyone. Our Download MP3 button will tell you there is no sound instead of giving you an empty file.

Case 2: the music was licensed only for the app

Instagram’s music library is licensed for playback inside Instagram. On some Reels, mostly with popular commercial songs, the music is mixed in only while you watch in the app and is not part of the stored audio stream. The downloaded file then has the creator’s voice but not the song. There is no way around this from the outside.

Quick checklist

  1. Play the Reel in the Instagram app with sound on. If it is silent there, it will be silent in any download.
  2. Check whether the file has an audio track (VLC on Android, or Properties › Details on Windows).
  3. Download again from our home page using the Reel’s Share › Copy link address, not a profile link.
  4. Still silent but the app plays sound? It is probably app-only licensed music (case 2).

If you only want the song from a Reel, use Download MP3. It saves the audio stream as a 192 kbps MP3, which is smaller than the video and plays in any music app.
